Wellbeing
As a school Mental Health & Emotional Well-being has always been central to our thinking.
“Supporting everyone’s emotional wellbeing and mental health, so that they can be listened to, are happy together and ready to learn”.
It is widely recognised that a child’s emotional health and wellbeing influences their cognitive development and learning, as well as their physical and social health and their mental wellbeing in adulthood. The Department for Education recognises that, in order to help their pupils succeed: schools have a role to play in supporting them to be resilient and mentally healthy.
“Mental health is a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
(World Health Organisation 2014)
At Ashbrow, we aim to promote positive mental health for every child, parent / carer and staff. We pursue this using both universal, whole school and specialised approaches for identified vulnerable pupils and families.
Vision Statement
The Ashbrow curriculum seeks to educate children beyond the confines of academic achievement; challenging, stimulating and supporting children throughout their personal journey. We are always mindful of our approach to mental health and wellbeing and ensure this is an integral part of our curriculum offer. Our focus is on supporting a positive long-term culture of mental health, and embedding an ethos within Ashbrow where mental health is regarded as the responsibility of all.
The Wellbeing in Schools Award.
Developed in partnership with the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), the Wellbeing Award for Schools is intended to help schools prepare and equip themselves to promote emotional wellbeing and positive mental health across the whole-school community. The vision is to create an education system where good emotional wellbeing and mental health are at the heart of the culture and ethos of our school, so that our pupils, with the support of their teachers, can build confidence and flourish. Evidence shows us that wellbeing is of central importance to learning and attainment, with high levels of wellbeing associated with improved academic outcomes.
