The Ashbrow Curriculum OFFER

Early Years

The school follows the revised Early Years statutory framework which came into effect from 1 September 2021.

Four guiding principles in EYFS settings are that:

- every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;

- children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships;

- children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; and

- children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Ashbrow School and British Values

Democracy

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We understand the need for their opinions and views to be valued and inform decision making.

Staff ensure that the democratic process is modelled on a daily basis. This is done by inviting questions and sharing views through discussion. Ashbrow children are taught explicitly to verbalise their thinking, to consider the greater good and be aware of the views and needs of others.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout our daily practice.  Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us. They are also taught about the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities, such as Police, Road Safety teams and the Fire Service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms. They are advised how to exercise these safely and with consideration and respect for others, for example through our assemblies, e-Safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of our school values. Children learn that their behaviour has an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect. We also share the consequences of what happens when respect and tolerance are not demonstrated.  We discuss current affairs with the children enabling them to make sense of the world they are in.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Ashbrow School sits in an area of cultural diversity, and we also place an emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE, PSHE and flexible curriculum teaching reinforce this. Visits to places of worship and visitors to assembly are promoted as appropriate. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. We understand that it is important to understand the different faiths of the world.
